The purpose of a persuasive genre has intentions to sway the audience’s perspective to that of the writer’s. For example, above is a picture with the captioned, “Quick”, under the bullet and quoted, “Slow, under the cigarette. The purpose of this visual/text-based genre was intended to reach out to people who smoked to try and get those help. The audience this genre was to reach people who needed help to stop smoking cigarettes as well as deterring non-smokers from starting. This genre invokes a strong sense of emotion with the use of the bullet and the cigarette in the picture. The bullet is a well-known symbol of death and when put next to the cigarette it gives the audience a perspective as to how deadly cigarettes can be. The mode that this genre takes is visually based. By using this mode, visual, and including a style of a dark background it gave those who smoke an eerie sense that cigarettes will kill you and that this is something you should certainly stop doing. This picture could easily be adapted into a commercial. For example, the bullet and the cigarettes would be the two main symbols from the commercial. The commercial would start off with something as a man dying from a bullet wound, quick and painful. Then the second half of the commercial would consist of a person who had been smoking for years and as a result they developed cancer where they were laying in their death bed in agonizing pain, with a screen at the end saying Need Help? Smoke smoking now! Toll-Free. This commercial proposed would be a great adaptation for the visually based photo.
